Pedal trouble and a strange-looking screw

Last year I bought a pair of LOOK Kéo Carbon pedals from an America eBay store for about $50 less than I would have paid in Australia. I knew that warranty repair might be a problem but assumed they would not break (old-design LOOK pedals have some reputation for being indestructible).

I was wrong – they did break, and right – warranty repair is a problem.

I received no help in Australia (mechanics at the bike shop I use didn’t want to attempt a repair). Next step is to try both LOOK and the the seller via e-mail to see if they will help. (I tried to register the pedals via the LOOK website but I couldn’t find a valid serial number on the box.)

The cause of this grief? A single screw fell out of the left pedal. It simply fell out, on the road somewhere. It screws into the end of the axle for the sprung flap that holds the cleat into place. The complete right pedal looks like this from underneath:

The incomplete left pedal looks like this:

The missing screw appears to be made of aluminium alloy and has a very strange thread:

A replacement one of those screws is all I want.

Well, did you find the screw? Mine just fell out, and I am now going through the same process.

    Hey Ritterview

I had it replaced with a standard machine screw, about two months ago. I’ll post a follow-up soon.

Exactly the same thing happened to me today.
    Obvious design fault.
It astounds me that the distributor did not honour the warranty? Did you report him to LOOK France?

The American eBay seller tried to get some help from his distributor without luck. I also sent a message to LOOK via their website but got no reply.

I agree that this looks like a design fault. These strange screws are actually hammer-driver screws, quite common in some metal fabrication work. I couldn’t get an exact replacement in Brisbane so I resorted to having the little axle tapped and a standard screw inserted.

    Thanks Michael.
I wrote to Look France, Pro Bike Kit and the UK distributor.
    No response as yet.
I too thought of tapping the axle and inserting a normal screw but I will wait for a response 1st.

Look did respond, said to go back to Probike kit. Probike kit got back to me. They said they offer a one year warranty on all faulty goods sold so there is light at the end of the tunnel.
